Saturday August 20 saw 45 premier BBQ teams battle it out for glory in the picturesque town of Bangalow in the Byron Hinterlands. They were competing for the title of Grand Champion of the Bangalow BBQ and Bluegrass Festival 2016.
This event was truly perfect in every conceivable way. The location is incredible, nestled in the hills of Byron Shire. Everything was lush and green as far as the eye could see. It doesn’t seem possible, but the weather was as good or better than the Burleigh BBQ Championships 2016 just a few weeks earlier (my gallery for that event is over here). I was fortunate enough to be on the Support Staff for the Australasian Barbecue Alliance‘s administration of the competition and can say that the Bangalow BBQ and Bluegrass Festival 2016 ran like clockwork: it was truly a pleasure to work with such a capable and competent team.
The competition was fierce and was suitably complemented by the live Bluegrass music. The teams all handed in superb, world-class BBQ dishes – not only were the meats obviously cooked to perfection but the presentation was top notch. I saw creativity like never before. While the judges had the best job in the house, we support staff got to sample anything that was left in the box. Possibly an even better deal!
The winners of the Bangalow BBQ and Bluegrass Festival 2016 were the Shank Bros, picking up their first Grand Champion after performing highly and consistently all season. Part of their prize was an invite to compete in a professional tournament in the United States. Have fun lads!
