I am unlucky in that I was born in the dead of winter. Growing up it meant that most of my birthday parties were indoors as it was too cold outside.

However, now I’m a grown-up I can have any type of party I please. I’d been planning to cook up something related to Easter for the March newsletter. However, I’d had to take Friday off work and then spent all weekend taking care of a sick wife and three year old.

And so it came to be that it was 6pm on a Sunday night, my wife and son were demanding dinner, and I hadn’t had a chance to get to the shops to buy the ingredients for a cook out. There is nothing quite as seductive as a Bacon and Egg Sandwich. I don’t know if it is the saltiness, the smokiness, or the savoury taste of bacon, or perhaps it’s a combination of all three, but there is simply nothing quite like that first delicious taste, with a mug of hot coffee early in the morning. Or lunch. Or dinner.

The Day I Dropped the F-Bomb in Front of a Group of Japanese School Kids…

It was the summer of 2009 – 2010 and I was working as an English Language teacher at a private language school on the Gold Coast. Being summer time meant that it was Study Tour season, and I was selected to teach the classes as I had previously been a high school teacher and I also had experience with Study Tours.

To catch you up, a Study Tour is when a small group of students will come to Australia from another country, say Japan or China, for a short period of time: two, maybe three weeks. For St Patrick’s Day – Bangers, Colcannon and Guinness Gravy

The most famous day of the month of March would have to be undoubtedly St Patrick’s Day. For most of us, it just means dressing up, drinking some green beer and making some awful attempts at Irish accents! On that one day per year, everybody is Irish! But what is St Patrick’s Day actually about?

Firstly, the word ‘saint’ is in the title, so it must be some church thing right? Correct! St Patrick’s Day is actually a Christian feast day, celebrating St Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland and dates back to the seventeenth century. Perhaps most interesting is that it is the one day during the period of Lent where the rules regarding eating and drinking alcohol are lifted, resulting in the modern celebration of feasts, parties, and pitchers of green beer.

So what do you think about jumping on your ‘Q to cook up a great St Patrick’s Day feast? And what if that recipe included the master of all Irish beers, Guinness? Catering Made Easy: Chicken Wings!

I was recently asked to cater a launch for my wife’s new business. She wanted her guests to mingle and network and so the brief was simple: healthy, canapé style food. (If you’re not familiar with the word, canapé just means ‘fancy finger food’.) With that in mind, I came up with the two choices of chicken wings: Buffalo Wings and a Jamaican Wing known as Jerk. The Day I Ruined a Football Game…

Barbecues come in all types and fortunately, they come in all sizes, which makes them great for taking to all types of different places. This can make for some great opportunities to have some good, cheap fun outdoors.

We are fortunate enough to live in a part of the world where we have a little river running behind the house, with a bike track and about eight hundred metres up the bike track is a local football club where you can go along and sit on the grass for free and watch the games.
